Jo Su-jeong presents "Blooming Here and Now" at Superior Gallery

Superior Gallery will host "Blooming Here and Now," a solo exhibition by artist Jo Su-jeong, featuring works that transition from abstract styles to figurative depictions of nature and home.

Artist Jo Su-jeong will showcase a range of works at Superior Gallery in Seoul from November 10 to 30. The exhibition features new pieces with concise compositions alongside earlier works that utilize white clay and mixed media on burlap to depict houses, flowers, and trees.

Superior Gallery will host the solo exhibition "Blooming Here and Now" by artist Jo Su-jeong from the 10th to the 30th at Exhibition Hall 1, located on the B1 floor of Superior Tower in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

The exhibition introduces a range of works, from existing pieces dealing with everyday and natural subjects such as houses, flowers, and trees, to new works that feature a concise arrangement of subjects. Visitors can observe the evolution of the artist's work, as she has expressed memories and emotions discovered in ordinary days and surrounding landscapes through painting.

Jo Su-jeong has depicted the time she has lived and the surrounding scenery through natural forms including houses, flowers, and trees. Her works, created by mixing white clay and other materials on burlap, feature branches, flowers, birds, ponies, and small houses. The characteristics of her work include rough surfaces, familiar figures placed upon them, and repeating dots and lines.

After continuing abstract painting work in her early career, the artist shifted toward figurative painting to express thoughts and emotions through concrete forms. Starting with works depicting blue nights and houses in the darkness, she expanded her subject matter to landscapes where flowers and houses harmonize.

The new works in this exhibition show a different composition than her previous landscape paintings. Unlike her earlier works that arranged various living things and objects against backgrounds of forests and skies, these new pieces place a small number of subjects concisely upon color fields. By leaving wide empty spaces between subjects, she allows the texture of the background and changes in color to be revealed, expressing familiar objects within new spatial relationships.

The houses that appear repeatedly in her works are subjects containing the artist's personal experiences and memories. For the artist, who lived abroad for a long time, a house was both a hometown and a space for life shared with family. Since returning to Korea, she has begun painting Hanoks, which are connected to her childhood memories, and has captured scenes encountered in the surrounding nature and daily life in her work.

Jo Su-jeong graduated from Seoul Women's University and studied painting at Otterbein College in the United States. After continuing abstract painting work in the United States for approximately 10 years, she transitioned to figure-centered work, and since returning to Korea, she has been active with houses and nature as her primary subjects. She currently resides in Gangwon-do and participates in solo and group exhibitions as well as art fairs both domestically and internationally.

The exhibition runs from November 10 to 30, with viewing hours from 10:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The gallery is closed on weekends and public holidays.
