The solo exhibition "Bukhansan Captured with Brushstrokes from the Scene" by Korean painter Kim Seok-hwan will be held at the Jeonbuk Museum of Art, Seoul Branch from the 29th to November 8. This exhibition showcases new ink wash paintings expressing the mountain terrain and surrounding scenery that the artist has observed while personally climbing Bukhansan for over 20 years.

Having also worked as an architect, Kim majored in architecture at the university and graduate school levels, which led to an interest in the topography of Seoul viewed through the lens of old Hanyang maps and feng shui. Based on this, he has captured not only the peaks, ridges, and valleys of Bukhansan but also the historical spaces surrounding the mountain, such as fortress walls and temples.

The works reveal the artist's methodology of expressing landscapes he has directly seen and felt on-site, based on the spirit of Gyeomjae Jeong Seon's true-view landscape painting. Rather than strictly following traditional landscape painting techniques, he has established his own brushstrokes based on field experience, minimizing color to express the forms and energy of the mountains through the properties and sensibilities of ink.

This exhibition is composed of newly produced works following the "Bukhansan Ink Paintings from Life Exhibition" held in 2021. In particular, large-scale panoramic works, over 4 meters wide, showing Bukhansan from the four cardinal directions, will be displayed. Visitors can compare how the arrangement of peaks and the flow of ridges change depending on the observation point, even for the same mountain.

The Jeonbuk Museum of Art, Seoul Branch operates to introduce the contemporary trends and formative characteristics of Jeonbuk art to visitors in Seoul and the metropolitan area. The branch conducts rental exhibitions and artist-critic matching programs, and plans to publish an annual yearbook containing exhibition records.

The exhibition is open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and is closed on Mondays.

Artist Kim Seok-hwan earned a bachelor's degree in architectural design from Seoul National University of Technology (now Seoul National University of Science and Technology) and master's and doctoral degrees in architecture from the graduate school of University of Seoul. He has been active as an architect since opening Teo·Ul Architecture in 1994, and has continued work spanning architecture and painting since holding his first solo exhibition at Cheong Gallery in 1995. He has served as an adjunct professor at Seoul National University of Technology, Gwangju University, and Sahmyook University, and his career includes winning a prize in the Korea National Park Service Korean Painting Special Open Call in 2021 and a prize in the Gyeomjae Jeong Seon Art Competition in 2026.
