Looking Again at What Noise Has Hidden… Faction to Hold 《Only Silence Does Not Betray, part. 2》

In an environment where countless images, notifications, and words pass by incessantly, what we miss becomes as important as what we see. It is not due to a lack of information, but rather because there is too much, causing certain things to be pushed away from our senses. This exhibition features artists who look back at these invisible things.

Faction will hold the group exhibition 《Only Silence Does Not Betray, part. 2》 from October 3 to 18. In this exhibition curated by Yoon Tae-gyun, artists Lee Su-jin, Human Infrastructure, and Yoo Se-eun participate to re-examine easily undetectable existences and structures through painting, video, and installation.

The 'silence' mentioned in the exhibition does not simply mean a state of no sound. Rather, it refers to things that have been hidden and are rarely detected amidst overflowing words and information.

Artist Yoo Se-eun rearranges fragments of landscapes viewed while moving within a single screen. Scenes such as buildings, signs, and playgrounds that momentarily pass by outside a car window do not connect into one perfect landscape. The artist leaves only minimal connections, such as shape, color, and location in memory, allowing different images to reside side by side. Rather than smoothly completing a scene with a single interpretation, she focuses on the relationship where images touch each other but ultimately do not merge.

The artist Human Infrastructure brings out communication facilities hidden within everyday landscapes. In 〈Plain Sight〉, base stations camouflaged like trees are photographed with infrared, and copper crystals are formed on the surface of the photograph so that the image itself reacts to electromagnetic waves. In 〈Field Monitor〉, broken CRT cameras, televisions, and antennas are used to reveal the interference and noise generated during the transmission process. Communication infrastructure, which operates constantly behind the scenery before our eyes but is difficult to perceive in daily life, moves to the center of the work.

Lee Su-jin's 〈Sfumato, Line of Symbiosis〉 starts from making distinct boundaries faint. Continuing from last year's experience sailing the Arctic Ocean and previous works, she has expanded the sfumato technique of painting into video, sound, and space. Rather than the form of the subject being clearly presented, light and color, data and objects permeate each other, and between grid-like aluminum structures, each element forms relationships and changes.

While the three artists use different media, they meet in that they look behind vivid images and clear messages. Rather than saying something more loudly, they move the layers that already existed but were hidden to the forefront, and this exhibition re-examines the place of the 'silence' that we have failed to hear.

Faction, where the exhibition is held, is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and can be viewed from 1 PM to 7 PM.
