Artist Jeong Hee-gyeong's Solo Exhibition 'Whispering Light'... Abstract Painting Unveiled Through Light and Color

The solo exhibition ‘Whispering Light’ by artist Jeong Hee-gyeong is being held at the Korean Art Museum in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province.

This exhibition introduces works that express light and color through painting and media art, and it will run until November 22.

In the exhibited works, one can observe forms of light created by layering various colors over a dark screen. Using deep navy as a base, colors such as purple, magenta, yellow, and cyan are repeatedly layered to create depth on the screen.

In particular, instead of using a brush, the artist uses a sea sponge to dab the paint. As small traces of color are repeatedly layered, circular or elliptical lights appear on the screen.

When viewed up close, different colored dots and traces are visible, but a characteristic feature is that when viewed from a certain distance, they connect as if they were a single light.

Works utilizing repetitive color arrangements are also introduced in this exhibition. Colors and shapes that continue at regular intervals create a rhythm on the screen, and rather than depicting specific objects, the screen is composed focusing on color and shape itself.

Jeong completes her works using simple formative elements such as dots and color planes, semicircles and ellipses, and curves and diagonals. Rather than presenting a specific story directly, she leaves room for viewers to interpret the works in their own way while looking at the colors and shapes.

The Korean Art Museum explained that rather than directly showing specific figures or stories, these works compose the screen using dots and color planes, semicircles and ellipses, curves and diagonals, etc.

They added that through abstract forms and spaces, viewers can look at the works based on their own memories and experiences.

Overseas criticism of artist Jeong Hee-gyeong's work was also introduced. Richard Vine, former editor-in-chief and art critic for the United States art specialist magazine ‘Art in America’, evaluated Jeong's work, stating, "It encompasses the harmony and meditative nature of Eastern art and the dynamism of light and darkness in Western art."

He continued to explain the characteristics of the work as "a unique pictorial world that explores inner hope and salvation through light."
